You may even be asking if it is necessary? Or why now? The majority of adults have their wisdom teeth extracted at some point, and the sooner the procedure is completed, the better. It has become common for dentists to refer their patient to an oral surgeon when it is time for them to have their wisdom teeth extraction valparaiso.

Why is wisdom teeth extraction necessary?

Wisdom teeth are an extra set of molars that grow in the back of your mouth. The reason they get their name, is that wisdom teeth do not grown in until early adult hood, usually between the ages of 17 and 25. It is very common for adults to have their wisdom teeth removed due to various reasons, including:

The wisdom teeth are impacted. When teeth are impacted it means they are trapped below the gum line. Impacted teeth can become infected or cause a lot of pain if they do not break the gum line and are not removed.

Due to their late growth, wisdom teeth often grow in at an angle. How the wisdom teeth grow in may create issues for your bite and your other teeth, such as causing shifting or bite misalignment.

Due to their placement in the back of your mouth, wisdom teeth can be difficult to reach when you brush and floss. Not being able to keep the teeth clean can lead to the development of cavities or gum disease.

The wisdom tooth extraction process

  • Pre-surgery appointment: Your oral surgeon will set an appointment with you to complete an exam and discuss the extraction procedure. At this appointment it is important to be honest with your surgeon about your current health including any medications you are taking. This is also a great opportunity for you to ask any questions you have about the procedure.
  • Surgery: The wisdom tooth extraction surgery will be over before you know it. In most cases, the surgery will take less than 45 minutes or less. Before the extraction, the surgeon’s assistants will administer a numbing agent and the anesthesia of their choice. The anesthesia used it based on the surgeon’s preference, but may be given to you intravenously through an IV in your arm or through inhalation of nitrous oxide through a mask. It is likely that you will not remember much after the anesthesia and you will feel relaxed through the entire extraction.
  • Post-surgery: Because you will be groggy after you wake up from the anesthesia it is in your best interest to plan to have help getting home from the procedure appointment. A few hours after the surgery, you may start to experience some pain. Your surgeon will likely give you pain medication and instructions on how to get through the few days after the surgery. You will want to be prepared with icepacks and post-surgery friendly foods. It is a good idea to have someone available to help you pick up prescriptions and any necessary resources.
