The Benefits of Porcelain Veneers

  • Veneers are virtually indistinguishable from your natural teeth
  • Cosmetic bonding and fillings can stain over time but veneers are resistant to stains and do not change color over time
  • Preserve your natural teeth with only a minimal amount of tooth structure being altered
  • If your teeth do not respond to your satisfaction with teeth whitening then veneers can make the darkest teeth brighter
  • Veneers can make your teeth whiter, brighter, straighter, and more symmetrical and may create a more youthful looking appearance and smile
  • Veneers are safe and are designed from biocompatible materials
  • With proper dental visits and good oral hygiene veneers can last 15-20 years
  • Veneers can improve the function and strength of your teeth
  • A new confident smile can ultimately help you look and feel healthier, live better, and increase your self-confidence

Type of Veneers

There are several different types of veneers and Dr. Drone will discuss with you about your cosmetic goals, your bite, and help you understand which veneer is most suitable to attain your esthetic goals. In general, there are four types of veneers offered by Michael Drone Dentistry & Prosthodontics that can be fully customized to your needs.

Veneers are thin shells of translucent porcelain (ceramic) which allows light to pass through the material. This unique characteristic can make the veneers appear indistinguishable from your natural tooth type of veneer is the most common veneer used in cosmetic dentistry. There are several types of ceramic materials and Dr. Drone and our in-house dental laboratory technician will discuss with you the proper material for your veneers. Ceramic veneers typically cover the front surface of the teeth and require contouring of the tooth.

Prepless porcelain veneers are more commonly known as “no-prep veneers” and can provide amazing results for the ideal candidate. They require no removal of the tooth prior to placement of the veneer. Prepless veneers are made of an extremely thins shell of ceramic material and can many time conceal the same imperfections as traditional veneers. If modifications to the teeth are needed to attain the desired cosmetic concern then this type of veneer is contraindicated.

In some instances Dr. Drone may need to do minimal re-shaping of the tooth also known as “minimal-prep.” Very little tooth preparation is required and the esthetic outcome is similar to the other types of veneers previously described.

Composite veneers are an alternative to porcelain veneers. Composite veneers can provide similar results to porcelain veneers cosmetically. However, composite veneers do not resist staining and are not as durable or as long-lasting as a porcelain veneer. Composite veneers typically need to be replaced every 5-8 years where porcelain veneers can last 15-20 years. An advantage of the composite veneer is it usually less expensive than a porcelain veneer initially.

Porcelain Veneers Procedure

The procedure for porcelain veneers is virtually painless and only takes two office visits. Dr. Drone and his dental technicians will take photos of your teeth and draft a personalized sketch to capture the shape of your tooth and all the colors required to make your custom veneer look stunning. Dr. Drone will gently apply anesthetic and then proceed to reshape and polish your tooth. An impression will be taken by using one of our three state-of-the-art digital impression scanners. The impression takes just a few short minutes. These digital scans will instantly be sent to our dental laboratory computers. From there, our talented dental technicians will begin designing your veneer. Within a few weeks, your custom designed veneer will be hand-crafted to blend flawlessly with your natural teeth. In the meantime, a temporary veneer is fabricated to cover and protect your tooth while the veneer is being fabricated. When you return for the delivery of your veneer, Dr. Drone will evaluate the color, shape and fit of your new custom designed veneer. A dental x-ray is always taken to verify the precise fit before the veneer is permanently cemented.

Candidates for Veneers

Porcelain veneers are one of several esthetic options to address your cosmetic concerns. Veneers can restore your confidence in your smile. Candidates requiring a porcelain veneer must have good general and oral health and have strong teeth with minimal restorative dental work. Teeth that are weakened with large fillings or decay may require a dental crown instead of a veneer. Dental crowns are esthetically very similar to veneers and are one of the most effective and cosmetic options in dentistry.

Dr. Drone is a prosthodontist with extensive knowledge and training in cosmetic dentistry, implant dentistry, and restorative dentistry and is a well-recognized in Northwest Indiana for creating cosmetic dental solutions.
