Fix Cracked Teeth

Most everyone treats their teeth as tools but using our teeth to open packages or to chew ice or hard candies can cause severe damage and tooth fracture. Things we do every day can damage the protective enamel on the exterior of our teeth leaving them vulnerable to injury. Inside of our teeth is a system of blood, tissue, and nerves keeping each tooth alive but a crack in the enamel gives food particles and bacteria an entryway to the delicate pulp of the tooth.

What if you cracked a tooth?

Like every other dental problem, a cracked tooth will not fix itself so even if you are not in pain, it is important that you see your dentist as quickly as possible to avoid further damage or even losing the tooth. Waiting to have a cracked tooth repaired leaves the interior pulp tissue susceptible to infection and inflammation. If infection does develop in the pop, you may require a root canal in addition to restorative treatment with your dentist.

Most dental offices reserve time in their schedule every day for emergencies such as this! You may even be able to receive treatment on the same day. If you require a root canal, your dentist can help you set up that appointment to get treatment as quickly as possible.

What are the treatment options for a cracked tooth?

If you do not need a root canal, your dentist can proceed with restoring your tooth. Dental bonding can be used for minor chips or fractures but if the damage is more extensive, a crown or veneer may be placed to save the tooth.

If you do need a root canal, an endodontist will perform treatment before your dentist restores the tooth. Sometimes, a fracture can extend it down into the pulp of the tooth and would require root canal therapy even if you were able to see your dentist right away. If your tooth fractures down into the root structure, the tooth may be hopeless and have to be extracted.

In the event that your tooth fractures so severely that it cannot be saved, your dentist will discuss restorative options with you and help determine which treatment path is best for you and your lifestyle. Bridges, partial dentures, and dental implants are all great restorative options to replace a missing tooth.

Getting treated as quickly as possible is key when it comes to a cracked tooth. It is possible to have a cracked tooth and not realize it so it is important to make sure to maintain regular visits with your dental office and allow x-rays to be taken when needed.
