What are the Types of Dentures?

Dentures valparaiso indiana are an excellent option to consider if you are missing a large portion of your teeth. There are a few different types and your dentist will discuss with you which type would be best to restore your teeth. All types are constructed of porcelain teeth mounted on an acrylic base which will be tinted to match the color of your gums. Here, we will review the different types to help give you an idea of what you may be facing.

Types of Dentures

  • Partial denture: Partial dentures are something to consider if you are currently missing or will be losing multiple teeth in one area of your mouth. A partial has attachments that enable it to be secured to healthy, neighboring teeth. They are removable for easy cleaning and help re-establish the integrity of the rest of your teeth by keeping them from shifting into the open space.
  • Traditional full denture: Full dentures are what most people think of when they think of dentures. They replace all of your teeth on either or both arches and are secured using suction and adhesion over the gums to stay in place.
  • Immediate denture: This type is placed directly after extraction and helps the extraction sites heal. These are not a viable option for everyone, so speak with your dentist to determine if it will work for you.
  • Snap-in denture: This option is a less costly one. Dental implants are placed and have a locator attachment on them for the denture to snap onto.
  • Implant supported dentures: Here, implants are placed into the bone of the arch to receive the denture. The porcelain denture is screwed into the implants. This is a more expensive procedure but is very stable and aesthetically pleasing but can only be removed by your dentist.
  • Overdentures: These are also implant secured dentures but this one can be removed on your own for cleaning.

How many healthy teeth you have remaining will be a major factor in determining the type of denture that will be best to meet your needs. Your individual overall health and the health of your jaw bone structure will enable you to receive any dental implants that you may require if an implant supported denture is the treatment advised for you.

Your dentist will refer you to either a Periodontist or if you require extractions, an Oral Surgeon for your implant placement. Your dentist will have your new denture fabricated at a dental lab and once you are healed from implant surgery, will place your denture. You may need a few follow-up visits to make sure your denture fits properly and is comfortable. Any concerns or issues should be addressed as soon as possible before any sores develop.
