How to Protect Your Dentures When Cleaning Them

Posted on 10/20/2018 by Dr. Michael Drone
How to Protect Your Dentures When Cleaning ThemIt is bad enough that you have to get dentures. The only thing worse is if you end up damaging the dentures you have. Just like your real teeth, it is important to learn how to care for your dentures.

The care for dentures includes cleaning them. Knowing how to do this can help keep the dentures fitting right and looking good for a long time.

Why Clean Dentures

Over the course of the day, dentures get food and debris on them. Bacteria can grow. It is as important to remove the bacteria off the dentures as it is to remove bacteria from the real teeth. If the bacteria remain on the dentures it can lead to bacteria on the gums and eventually gum disease.

Cleaning the dentures includes brushing and flossing. It also includes cleaning them in some type of cleaning mixture. The recommendation is to clean dentures and soak them every day.

Protecting the Dentures

It is easy to damage the dentures when cleaning them. The biggest danger often is dropping them. Wet dentures are slippery, and they can easily fall out of the hand and hit the floor. That can cause them to break or damage them in some way that they do not fit properly.

Cleaning them over a bowl of water is one way to protect them as you clean. It is also important to use the right cleaners and techniques for cleaning them.

Aggressive brushing can damage the dentures in some of the same ways it can damage real teeth. Strong cleaners may cause harm to the dentures. Always follow the directions of cleaning products to keep your dentures from possible damage.

The last thing to protect the dentures after cleaning to remember is to either put them back into your mouth or soak them in water to keep them from drying out. It is easy to forget about them and leave them lying around after you clean them.
