Can You Wear Dentures Immediately After an Extraction?

Posted on 9/10/2018 by Dr. Michael Drone
Can You Wear Dentures Immediately After an Extraction? How long do I have to wait to wear dentures after my teeth are extracted? This is a popular question that people looking to wear dentures, ask, especially when they several or all of their teeth have been extracted.

After your teeth are extracted, you have the option of waiting until the gums have healed to get dentures – which usually takes a few weeks.

This option is great because it also allows your gums to realign themselves, thus guaranteeing a better fit. However, if you are worried about being seen without teeth, there is the option of immediate dentures (or same day dentures), which are fitted immediately after your teeth have been extracted.

Benefits of Getting Immediate Dentures

Immediate dentures offer several benefits. To start with, they protect you from having to appear in social situations without teeth, something that can make you feel self-conscious. Immediate dentures also allow for the duplication of the shape and size of your natural teeth – something that is done before they are extracted.

When fitted immediately after extraction, dentures also act as a bandage, which prevents further bleeding of the gums and promotes better and faster healing. Lastly, immediate dentures allow you to continue enjoying oral functions such as talking and eating - you should, however, note that it takes time to resume the full natural functioning.

Are There Disadvantages of Immediate Dentures?

Immediate dentures can offer you several benefits, but they also come with a number of drawbacks. These include the possibility of lacking a natural fit during the first few weeks - as the gums are healing. Immediate dentures are also more expensive than conventional dentures since they require more time to construct (due to the duplication of the natural teeth look)
