Dental Restorations to Aid with TMJ problemsMost of the cases of temporomandibular joint disorders or simply TMJ are often temporary, as they were caused by external factors like whiplash for instance or a severe blow to the face. TMJ can be attributed to muscle problems, misaligned jaw or the mandibular joint itself.

That's the reason why it's important that your doctor will first monitor your condition in order to rule out the possibilities. If the problem persists, however, don't discount a visit to the dentist in order to correct the problem.

Dental Procedures to Address TMJ Issues

The TMJ refers to that point where your jaw meets your skull. It allows full control of the lower jaw. Patients with TMJ problem will experience ear-splitting headaches, limited control of their jaw, inability to open their mouths and throbbing pain in the ear.

If you suspect that you are suffering from TMJ problems, it's best to visit our clinic right away so we can make the necessary assessment.

Range of treatments includes overbite or underbite correction, dental implants, mouth reconstruction and jaw alignment. In some instances, we may have to grind the teeth in order to correct the overbite and underbite.

Fortunately, only a small percentage of the patients who came to see us required surgery. This is in line with the national average. In most instances, a splint is recommended to be worn by the patient to cut the stress to the jaw. We customize the splint according to your needs, and only after conducting a thorough checkup.

But if the problem is structural, you may need maxillofacial surgery or orthodontia. Also, we may recommend arthrocentesis or arthroscopy procedure to correct the TMJ problem. They are less invasive compared to the open surgery procedure.

To recap, there are so many possible causes of your TMJ. The only way to know for sure is to visit our office for a checkup and an x-ray.
