Ways of Increasing Healing Following Implant Surgery

Posted on 7/30/2017 by Dr. Michael Drone
Increase your healing process after dental implants.
If you have dental implants put in, the healing process is the most crucial part of the entire procedure. If you don't take the time to heal properly after the procedure, it could leave you with implants that aren't lined up right to give you a full bite that doesn’t hurt. Your oral surgeon is going to give you tips on how to recover for the first few days after surgery. However, you need to turn to your prosthodontist when it comes to ensuring the best healing over the next few months.

How to Improve Your Recovery Success After Implant Surgery

Being incredibly careful following surgery is the best way to recover properly after getting dental implants. You are going to be sore anywhere from 2-3 days for a single implant or two, to 7-10 days for larger implants. However, your mouth is going to take 3-6 months, on average, to really feel like normal. If you had grafts done along with the implants, it could take up to one full year to feel better.

You need to make sure that you carefully eat until you are given the all-clear to eat like normal. This typically comes after the final crowns have been placed. You want to eat softer foods, and be mindful when you chew. Even if you are eating something soft, like oatmeal, you can still misalign your jaw during a bite and cause damage to your implants.

Talk to your prosthodontist following your procedure to find out what other things they recommend. The gentler you are when it comes to your healing time, the better your implants will attach, and the longer life they will have as long as you keep your mouth healthy. If you take really good care of your oral health following implant surgery, they can last the rest of your life.
