The Germs You Don't Think About...Ew!

Posted on 8/20/2016 by Dr. Michael Drone
A close up of a man’s tongue covered in germs!Germs! They are everywhere! Alright, maybe that's a bit dramatic.

For the most part germs are just a part of life that we learn to deal with. Wash your hands when they get dirty, take a shower once a day, clean your clothes when they get dirty, etc. There are a lot of places germs like to hide that we would probably be happier not thinking about.

Doorknobs are pretty obvious germ meeting spots but we rarely think of our toothbrush when we think of germs. The fact of the matter is that we use toothbrushes to wash away bacteria (germs) within our mouth, and we typically keep them in the bathroom! That's a recipe for disaster.

The Inside of Your Mouth

There are potentially hundreds of species of oral bacteria that reside at any given time within your mouth. That's a mouth that gets brushed regularly, the mouths that aren't so lucky can be comparably dirtier than a dirty bathroom floor! As a result, germs tend to hang out on toothbrushes.

The Toilet Sits Mere Feet Away From Your Toothbrush

Even the biggest of bathrooms is not terribly large. Every time you flush the toilet you are sending splutters of toilet spray into the air and in that small room, some of it will probably be landing on - that's right - your toothbrush!

What to Do

Try to replace your toothbrush at least once every three months. Consider buying toothpastes that include triclosan/copolymer as these can kill bacteria with great efficiency. Give your bristles a nice bath in hydrogen peroxide every couple of weeks.

Put the lid on the toilet down when you flush and always allow your toothbrush to breath as placing it in a damp container can foster more bacterial growth.

Please call us today if you have any questions about your oral health.
