Exploring the Pros and Cons of Overdentures

A pair of dentures floating inside a glass jar.If you are missing a lot of teeth, you may be looking for an option to replace them. In the past, dentures may have only been available if all of the teeth were removed.

However, overdentures can now be used if you still have some remaining natural teeth left over. These dentures are intended to fit over the roots of the teeth that are remaining in the bone, and it uses these tooth roots to anchor support for the dentures.

While this might sound like a good option for you, it is important that you fully understand the pros and cons of overdentures before you make a decision.

The Benefits of Overdentures

If you are interested in overdentures, you are making a good first step in getting your beautiful smile back. This restorative option comes with a variety of great benefits:

•  By maintaining your natural teeth, you can help to preserve your jawbone. This can reduce negative effects on the gum line and your facial shape.
•  Retaining your natural teeth will keep pressure off of the gums.
•  Your remaining teeth will be able to improve denture stability.
•  Many people find that their dentures are more comfortable if they have some of their natural teeth left underneath.

The Shortcomings of Overdentures

Overdentures aren't always going to be your best option. If you have high levels of decay or if your teeth are loose as a result of gum disease, you might not be a good candidate.

Additionally, this method of restoring the teeth could be on the expensive side, especially if your remaining teeth need a root canal or other work done beforehand. Leaving teeth under the dentures can also affect the fit of the appliance.

When it comes to determining whether overdentures are right for you, your dentist is your number one ally. Contact our office today to discuss your tooth restoration options.
