Are You a Good Candidate for a Dental Crown?

A diagram of how a dental crown works. When your teeth are decayed, broken, or severely damaged, you can suffer from a variety of dental problems. Not only do these issues look unattractive, but they can also cause considerable pain and sensitivity.

You might also have a hard time chewing and eating, so to correct the problem, you may be considering a dental crown - but are you a good candidate?

What Exactly is a Dental Crown?

Basically, a crown is a cover for a damaged tooth. It will cover up your tooth in its entirety so that it can protect it from future damage while improving the way it looks, its alignment, and its shape.

If you have a root canal, you will likely need a crown to protect your tooth, and crowns are also placed onto dental implants in order to restore the structure and appearance of your smile.

When Are Dental Crowns Recommended?

Your dentist will likely be the first person to recommend a dental crown in order to fix one of your teeth, and there are a few scenarios in which this option is likely to be discussed:

•  To restore a tooth that has been broken or fractured
•  To protect a tooth that is already weak from breaking in the future
•  To replace a large filling if there isn't enough of your natural tooth left
•  To cover up a tooth that is shaped poorly or discolored

Who is a Good Candidate?
So, who is a good candidate for a dental crown? The best candidates are people who have experienced major damage and decay to a tooth.

Additionally, you'll need to have enough of your original tooth structure remaining so that it can support a crown. If you don't have enough remaining tooth structure, your dentist will likely suggest another option.
