Are Loose Dentures Ruining Your Smile?

Posted on 3/24/2016 by Dr. Michael Drone
A pair of dentures floating inside a glass jar.Although dentures are durable and long-lasting, they aren't intended to last forever. High quality and well-made dentures are lightweight and provide a secure fit, but even the best suction can eventually start to loosen.

For this reason, it is recommended that dentures are refitted annually. Without these periodic adjustments, your loose dentures could ruin your smile.

Swollen, Irritated, and Raw Gums

As humans, we tend to favor one side of the mouth or the other when we chew. Unfortunately, when wearing dentures, the acrylic plates are constantly contacting your gums, and this added pressure on one side of the mouth can irritate sensitive gum tissues. As a result, portions of the gums can develop raw patches, swelling, and painful sores.

Infections

When your dentures develop sores, infections can arise when they are exposed to oral bacteria. Additionally, failure to properly care for your false teeth can cause the buildup of potentially dangerous bacteria on the surface of the appliance.

By wearing the dentures at all hours of the day and failing to clean them properly, infections can develop. Additionally, eating a diet high in carbs or living with diabetes can also increase your risk for developing a type of yeast infection that is known to affect the mouth.

If your dentures are loose, the first step that you should take is to contact your dentist to have your appliance inspected. They may need to be relined, or if it has been several years since your last pair, a replacement might be needed.

Dental implants are also a good option, as these restorations are long-term and can secure a new set of teeth to your mouth without worrying about poor fit or the use of adhesives. The end result is a beautiful smile without worry about infection, sores, or any embarrassing slips when eating, laughing, or speaking.
